Comparing Naturopathic Doctors (ND's) and Conventional Physicians (MD's and DO's)

Licensed naturopathic doctors (NDs) like Dr. Peter Bongiorno attend four year medical schools which are accredited by the U.S. government and the AANMC. During the first two years of naturopathic medical school, naturopathic doctoral candidates learn the basics of medicine (anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry) as well as clinic medicine (such as physical exams, blood draws, minor surgery, pharmacology). During the second two years, ND students focus on clinical classes such as immunology, dermatology, gastroenterology, neurology, cardiology, endocrinology, pharmacology, genetics, and orthopedics (musculoskeletal and joints). ND students also receive extensive clinical work in an outpatient clinic setting.

At the end of the second year, naturopathic doctor students take basic science board exams and then after the fourth year take very comprehensive clinical boards.

Dr. Peter's philosophy is that all doctors, both conventional and holistic, are valuable, and an integrative blend of both medicines can typically help a patient better than one or the other.  He also believes in the future, holistic and integrative care will be the standard medicine, and be simply called "medicine."

Naturopathic doctors receive a lot more training and clinical supervision in a holistic care clinic where the focus is thinking about the body as an integrated whole. Conventional doctors receive more training in hospitals, emergency care, and use of drugs.

The mission of naturopathic care is to understand the underlying reasons for why a person’s health is out of balance, and then to employ the most non-toxic approaches to help the body return to balance. Please note naturopathic doctors like Dr. Peter are not against the use of medications, especially if there is an urgent care concern. But, even with medication use, once the urgent issue is stable, it is still important in the long term to seek the underlying cause of illness and avoid an over-reliance on medications.
